The efficient organization of transports is one of the core problems in hospital
logistics. The primary goal of any transport service is to take patients to and
from their appointments, and to carry materials, supplies and equipment to their
destinations on time. The provision of these services is likely to have a large
impact upon the efficiency of other departments throughout the hospital that
depend on these services. For example, a delay in delivering a patient to an
operating room highly impacts surgery plans.
Opti-Trans is a software application for real-time
scheduling, monitoring and tracking in-house hospital transports of patients and
materials/supplies. It was developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics
(ITWM) in Germany together with the software companies SIEDA GmbH (Germany) and
COMEXAR Engineering AG (Switzerland).
